Homecoming heartbreak, Bearcats lose 31-28 in OT to Mustangs
The Cincinnati Bearcats have had a tough year so far coming into this year’s homecoming game 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the AAC. In years past SMU would be an easy game for such a big event, but this year the Mustangs have improved coming into Nippert Stadium with a record of 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the AAC.
Would the Bearcats be able to break their four game losing streak? Well in the first half they were only down 21-20. In the second half the defense kept the game close and on a huge fourth down Hayden Moore hit Devin Gray for 21 yard touchdown to put the Bearcats down 2 and then hit Gray again to tie the game with a 2-point conversion. SMU made a field goal to take a 31-28 in overtime, but the next drive on third down Hayden Moore was being sacked and forced a bad throw that was tipped and intercepted, game over.
Positives on the game is the defense got to the quarterback with 3 sacks, they also had 5 tackles for loss. Perry Young had a monster game with 13 tackles. Also the running game got on track with 249 yards on 42 carries and 1 touchdown. Gerrid Doaks had 91 yards, Mike Boone had 55 yards, Hayden Moore had 52 yards and Mike Warren had 51 yards. That is a nice showing on the ground.
Besides the bad throw, the Bearcats had a 3rd and 26 they allowed to be converted in overtime that eventually allowed SMU to kick the game winning field goal.
The Bearcats now have an off week to regroup, they have four games left in the season and need to run the table if they are going to be bowl eligible during the first year of Luke Fickell’s tenure.
The Bearcats are now 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the AAC. They will face Tulane 11/4.
